Milestone Achieved: 400+ Trained; Upping Access To Additive Manufacturing

Access to expertise in additive manufacturing is increasingly a priority among organizations eager to embrace new technologies in their operations -- but it can be hard to find. Additive manufacturing (AM) remains a nascent technology, and training and up-skilling are paramount to establishing effective strategies. The Lanterman Group is a proven source for training both current and future workers of all levels of expertise and organizational participation. Over the last four years, we have trained more than 400 individuals.

Understanding just what is needed is the first step for engaging in a successful training initiative. The Lanterman Group has created several courses targeted toward executives, managers, and technical personnel with appropriate levels of AM competency development. These include:

  • Executive Courses:

    • Become familiar with AM technologies

    • Derive implications for the organization

    • Explore the strategic and financial benefits of AM technologies

  • Manager Courses

    • Learn about AM technologies and use cases

    • Apply AM technologies for specific outcomes; develop implementation pathways

    • Assessing organizational readiness

  • Technical Courses

    • Application-specific learning

    • Advanced technical areas

    • “Prove-out” boot camps

The Lanterman Group was the first company to focus on Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) and related competency and hands-on skill development, especially for metal technologies. To date, 400+ professionals have been trained using our original content across 10+ focused offerings.

One way The Lanterman Group offers its training to the market place is in partnership with America Makes, through the Advanced Curriculum in Additive Design, Engineering and Manufacturing Innovation (ACADEMI) program. The ACADEMI to offers a comprehensive set of immersive training experiences with advanced AM curriculum, delivered in an intense, hands-on environment, integrating skills from multiple disciplines employed in DfAM processes..

The content used in The Lanterman Group’s courses connects AM theory to practical use. This is a core principle to how we approach instruction, and is a methodology we’ve been perfecting over the last four years.

As an example of our innovation in the AM training space, we partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to offer access to advanced design and simulation software required to execute the hands-on portions of the coursework. This is, we believe, something unique to The Lanterman Group in connecting with our clients. Ease of access to information, including both in-person and virtual interactions, access to modern software, and hands-on use of 3D printing equipment, is critical for those developing familiarity with new concepts.

Course instructors include many industry seasoned individuals familiar with the end-to-end additive manufacturing workflow. From Anthony Hughes (Founder and President) to Dr. Edward Herderick, (Director of Additive Manufacturing, Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence, The Ohio State University) to dedicated SMEs and instructors, this team works together to develop targeted content to best meet the needs of each client and deliver top-quality courses.

Feedback from course participants has been encouraging. Recent participants have shared testimonials from several tracks, saying:

The instructors were excellent. Having experts in DfAM, metallurgy, machine operation, and machine software all in the same location for the entire week was great. It provided an integrated metal AM perspective that we have not found elsewhere.
Tying the hands-on exercises to real metal parts being printed to the final exercise was very relevant to what we do.
This course provided valuable information for decision making and understanding the metal AM processes from start to finish.

In the near future, The Lanterman Group will also be scaling up training efforts to open up to a much broader audience. The upcoming offering will establish a new standard for accessible, accelerated and intensive training that graduates participants straight into Additive Manufacturing employment.
